5 things to know about Cameroon at the Confederations Cup

Source: Notresport ™
After winning the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 15 years, Cameroon will represent the Confederation of African Football in Russia during the 2017 Confederations Cup. This will be the Indomitable Lions' fourth appearance in the tournament, with their best finish coming in 2003 when they finished as runners-up.

They're currently in real jeopardy of missing out on the 2018 World Cup, but what five things should you know about Cameroon heading into this tournament?

Cameroon have qualified for the World Cup more than any other African nation
Cameroon have plenty of international pedigree, having qualified for the World Cup seven times in their illustrious history (1982, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014). However, they've only made it out of the group stage once, but that 1990 quarter-final trip made them the first African nation to progress that far in the tournament.

Cameroon won AFCON, but their joy may be short-lived
Their pedigree may be strong, but they're in real jeopardy of missing out on Russia 2018. Cameroon won this year's AFCON in spectacular fashion, lifting the trophy for the first time in 15 years, but in World Cup qualifying they sit four points behind Nigeria after two matches, and with four games to play, they'll need to be at their best to finish top of Group B and make to Russia for next year's World Cup.

Cameroon still haven't found a replacement for Samuel Eto'o
Samuel Eto'o is by far the most decorated and accomplished player in Cameroon's history, and they still haven't found a replacement for the legendary striker since his retirement in 2014. No one's been able to touch Eto'o's 56 goal total for his national team, and really, they've struggled to find anyone who can come remotely close to it. Even when the won the Africa Cup of Nations, only one player scored multiple goals. Finding the back of the net is a big issue with this Cameroon side, and it's part of the reason they've struggled early on in qualifying.

Vincent Aboubakar might be their best hope
If Cameroon are going to get on the scoresheet, there's a good chance Besiktas striker Vincent Aboubakar will be the one to grab the goals for them. His record isn't great -- 16 in 56 caps for the Indomitable Lions, but he's still relatively young (25) and improving. It was his strike that gave them the AFCON title, and they'll be hoping he can keep firing them forward in Russia as well.

Andre Onana looks like the future in goal
Scoring goals may be an issue, but keeping them out likely won't be as big of a problem with the talents of young Andre Onana in goal. Onana started out at Barcelona at the tender age of 13 due to the influence of the Samuel Eto'o Foundation, but joined the growing numbers of La Masia departures when he signed on with Ajax in 2015. He broke through as their first choice goalkeeper this season, and was a revelation in the Eredivisie and Europa League. He's only won one cap for the Cameroonian national team so far, and he'll have to battle fellow 21-year-old and ex-Barcelona man Fabrice Ondoa for the gloves, but with his fantastic showings this past season it may only be a matter of time before he gets the nod.
